Please note that the comprehensive USA Cycling upgrade policy can be found here. For the most up-to-date collegiate upgrade information, individuals are encouraged to refer to the Collegiate Policy Document.
In collegiate cycling, the categories and upgrade criteria align with those used in non-collegiate racing. When participating in a collegiate race, riders can earn USA Cycling upgrade points if the race satisfies all the necessary upgrade requirements, including field size and distance, as specified by USA Cycling. Riders seeking an upgrade must submit their requests through their USA Cycling online account and provide evidence of their current category during registration. These upgrade requests are then reviewed by the rider’s Conference Director.
Note: Collegiate National Championship results may be used for upgrades from Category 2 to Category 1.
Road Race Weekend Minimum – Riders must compete in 4 mass starts before upgrading. Exceptions can be made if the rider places in the top 3 for two races in a row in a collegiate weekend.
In order to earn upgrade points, races must adhere to specific distance standards. If a race falls short of the minimum required distance, it does not qualify for upgrading. However, there’s an exception: if a road race is shorter than the road race minimum but still exceeds the criterium minimum, it can contribute to upgrading using the criterium points schedule. Additionally, points earned from General Classification (G.C.) placements in stage races are eligible only for Category 3 to 2 and Category 2 to 1 upgrades.
Note: Collegiate National Championship results may be used for upgrades from Category 2 to Category 1.
Riders may advance as quickly as they wish up to Category B.
Category C racers must move to Category B after placing in the top five in five races.
Category B riders may move up to Category A after two top-five finishes.
Category B riders must advance to Category A after placing in five top-five finishes.
Cyclocross categories may also be upgraded by conversion from a rider’s earned road or mountain bike (endurance) category. If, during the season, a rider upgrades their road category or XC category, the cyclocross category can be upgraded to match his or her road or XC category at the request of the rider or the administrator.
All information on this page is provided by USA Cycling. If you have any questions regarding collegiate upgrades, please contact your WCCC Conference Director. Please note that indoor time trials, power tests, training rides, and any non-sanctioned USA Cycling events do not count toward upgrade requests. All upgrades should be processed through your My USA Cycling Page. When applying for a collegiate upgrade, please note that results being used to warrant the upgrade need to be of the same discipline (i.e., Road Race results do not count for Mountain Bike upgrades).
